Their Own Desire follows the story of a woman named Lally who becomes upset when she learns that her parents are divorcing due to an affair that her father has had. These circumstances become complicated after learning that her new-found love interest is the son of her father's other woman.
It is based on the novel of the same name by Sarita Fuller.
Norma Shearer lost the Academy Award for this film to herself in another film: The Divorcee (1930).
One can still swim in the swimming pools featured in the film at the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, California. The diving boards and diving platforms, however, are no longer in existence.
Editorial:
The story is honestly rather silly and unbelievable. But, with that, the beautiful Norma Shearer gives a fantastic performance, the production design is good, and the photography is interesting at times. As the film is relatively short, it is much appreciated that it does not feel the need to drag the story out for longer than is necessary. This always makes the viewing experience a little better.
